Legal GenAI Engineer
The Legal GenAI Engineer will be responsible for the deployment, maintenance, and optimisation of the firm’s generative AI (GenAI) applications and technology stack.

The role
As a key member of our Information Technology team, the Legal GenAI Engineer will be responsible for the deployment, maintenance, and optimisation of the Firm’s generative AI (GenAI) applications and technology stack. This role ensures the seamless operation of critical Gen AI systems and productivity tools that support legal workflows. The engineer will work closely withlegal teams, vendors, and IT colleagues to deliver secure, efficient, and innovative Gen AI solutions.

Given the international nature of the firm, flexibility both in terms of hours and occasional travel (including international) is required.
The role reports to the firm’s Head of Infrastructure and Information Security (who is being replaced by our new Senior Infrastructure and Information Security Manager role). Both are based in London. The role also has a dotted line report to our CEO based in Washington DC in respect of some AI initiatives. The Engineer has regular interaction with many of the fim’s partners and should be comfortable in such an environment.

The responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:
Ownership of all technical aspects of the firm’s GenAI applications. These currently include ChatGPT Enterprise, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Jus AI and Claude.
Ownership of all technical aspects of the firm’s applications supporting the use of GenAI tools. Currently this includes GitHub.
Developing GenAI-backed services and applications (assistants, copilots, agents, document workflows).
Implementing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities.
Integrating LLMs via APIs/SDKs into the firm’s technology stack.
Ensuring all GenAI applications are secure and always operating efficiently through good maintenance and patching regimes and engage with our GenAI applications vendors where required to achieve this.
Optimising model performance and costs.
Mitigating LLM risks through the avoidance/minimisation of prompt injection, data exfiltration, unsafe outputs, and hallucination impact.
Monthly reporting on latency, cost, error rates, quality metrics, and model/feature usage amongst our people.
Providing 2nd/3rd line technical support for all the firm’s GenAI applications.
Leading on the successful technical design and implementation of new GenAI applications required by the firm.
Working with our vendors to prepare estimates for work or renewals for budgeting purposes.
Evaluating emerging GenAI tools for potential adoption.
Partnering with legal teams to identify opportunities for AI-driven efficiencies.
Contributing to the firm’s IT Strategy by championing innovative solutions.
Working closely with the Director of IT, Head of Infrastructure and Information Security, Information Security & Legal Applications Analyst, Cloud Infrastructure and Security Engineer and Senior IT Manager to provide configuration documentation and userfriendly best practice guides in relation to the firm’s legal applications.
Delivering training and guidance to the firm’s people on the effective use of GenAI tools.
Defining and enforce the firm’s AI governance including acceptable use, review processes, auditability, and documentation.
Providing support to the firm’s other Engineers, Analysts and our Managed Service Provider (MSP) who have ownership of all technical aspects of our Security, Legal Applications and infrastructure including the WAN, LAN, Firewalls, Automox, Autopilot, Meraki, Druva, Azure, Entra AD, M365, ShareFile, Teams, Exchange, Entra, Apple Business Manager, Mimecast, FluidOne, CrowdStrike, Netskope, Authenticator, JAMF and Rapid 7, iManage 10 Cloud, Intapp Walls and Conflicts, SharePoint, the Office Suite, Litera Compare, Metadact, BigHand and Intune.
Providing support to the firm’s other individuals administering systems such as Interaction, Cascade HR, Aderant Expert Sierra, Billblast, iTimeKeep and the firm’s Intranet and Website.
Always adhering to the firm’s IT Strategy, IT Operating Principles, GDPR and ISO27001 certification in relation to our GenAI tools.
Being available outside of 3C IT office hours in the case of a firm emergency and being available to undertake planned work outside of 3C IT office hours if necessary.
Skills and knowledge
3+ years proven experience in GenAI engineering preferably within a legal or professional services environment.
Strong knowledge of the primary foundational models from Open AI (GPT), Google (Gemini), Anthropic (Claude) and Meta (Llama).
Extensive Experience with GenAI platforms, including prompt engineering and AI governance.
Understanding of tokenisation/cost drivers, latency trade-offs, and evaluation methods.
Ability to assess and mitigate GenAI-specific threats (prompt injection, data leakage, jailbreaks).
Relevant certifications (e.g. Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102), AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional, etc.) are desirable.
Proficiency in Windows Server, Entra AD, Microsoft 365, and Azure.
Familiarity with ITIL practices and service management tools (e.g., ConnectWise).
Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
A comprehensive understanding of the role of technology in facilitating the delivery of a business’s services.
Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with a clear client service ethos.
