The role
This role will involve working closely with partners and other colleagues across the firm on high value, complex international arbitration cases—principally disputes involving transnational commercial contracts and international investment treaties between parties located in multiple jurisdictions. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting partners with advising and representing clients in, and in relation to, commercial arbitration, investment treaty arbitration and public international law matters.
- Conducting research, gathering evidence, and reviewing documents.
- Drafting advice, correspondence, and pleadings.
- Assisting with the preparation of witness and expert evidence.
- Liaising with clients, witnesses and experts, tribunals, and opposing counsel.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Qualified lawyer with a current practicing certificate. Licensed to practice in Washington, DC or eligible to gain SLC status.
- Professional experience or significant academic training, in high value, complex international investment, and/or commercial arbitration.
- Strong and proven dispute resolution technical skills and experience of working under the principal international arbitration rules.
- A demonstrated desire to practice as a specialist arbitration lawyer.
- A demonstrated desire to develop and use their oral and written advocacy skills.
- Excellent academic background – educated to Master’s level.
- Ability to fluently converse, present, and write effectively in English.
- Additional languages to add to the firm’s wide ranging international language capabilities.
Skills and Knowledge
Competitive candidates will possess:
- The ability to write clearly, economically, and persuasively in support of a client’s case.
- The ability to identify relevant lines of research, and implementing rapidly with appropriate levels of depth, care, and creativity. Good grasp of appropriate sources and tools for research.
- The ability to analyze complex legal and factual problems, and to identify challenges and solutions to a client’s case.
- A strong understanding of the substantive and procedural aspects of contract and treaty arbitration law and practice.
- Rigor, accuracy, and ability to structure written work product to suit demands of the case.
- The ability to orally present a client’s case confidently, succinctly, and persuasively, while maintaining accuracy and credibility with a tribunal.
- The ability to manage own and others’ work professionally and efficiently using commercially sound management practices that serve the best interests of the firm and its clients.
- The ability to communicate effectively with individuals, teams, and clients at all levels and present confidently and with authority.
Responsibilities may vary depending on local practice rules and whether the role holder is licensed to practice in the jurisdiction in which the role is based.
The anticipated full-time base salary range offered for this role will be between $225,000 and $260,000. This represents the firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant experience, performance, qualifications, internal equity and the needs of the firm.
